In high school, my sister and I volunteered at C.A.R.E. shelter in Evanston, Illinois, every sunday morning from 8 am to noon, and then got banana milkshakes from the Steak and Shake across the street to reward ourselves. We were most often responsible for exercising and socializing the dogs. They always had so much energy it was like we couldn’t take them out enough. It is a no-kill shelter.
During that time, it never once occured to me that a banana milkshake wasn’t a good enough reward for 4 hours of seriously hard work.
